Evaluation, Triage, and Stroke Systems of Care Wade Smith, MD, PhD, director of the UCSF Neurovascular Service, specializes in stroke prevention, the management of acute stroke, critical care medicine, cerebral blood-flow monitoring with transcranial Doppler techniques and the medical management of patients after stroke. As a neurointensivist trained in both critical care and neurology, he directs the UCSF Neurological Intensive Care Unit, a 16-bed ICU dedicated to the care and resuscitation of patients with neurological injury. Many of the patients he evaluates are referred for a second or third opinion, but he also sees patients on primary referral. Endovascular Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke Randall Higashida, MD, Clinical Professor of Radiology, Neurological Surgery, Neurology, and Anesthesiology, at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, and Chief of the Division of Interventional Neurovascular Radiology. His supervises one of the largest tertiary referral centers in the country, specializing in interventional and diagnostic neuroradiology. He has served as the past President of the Society of Neuro Interventional Surgery (SNIS), past Chairman of the American Heart Association Cardiovascular Radiology and Interventions Council, and served on the Executive Committee of the Joint Section of Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery, and the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR). |
Acute Ischemic Stroke in the Perioperative Setting Adrian Gelb, MBChB, is distinguished Professor of the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He has served as the leader in multiple national and international Anesthesia Societies having been the President (or equivalent) of 3 societies – the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS), the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC), and the International Society for Anesthetic Pharmacology (ISAP). He currently serves on the California Society of Anesthesiologists Executive Committee and chairs the Education Programs Division, the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) Executive Committee, and is the Chair of WFSA Safety and Quality of Practice Committee. The American Stroke System of Care Nerissa Ko, MD, Professor of Neurology at UCSF. She isa neurointensivist, or a neurologist with critical care training, who specializes in the care of hospital patients undergoing neurovascular treatment. She earned her medical degree at John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. She completed a residency in neurology and fellowships in critical care medicine and neurocritical care at UCSF Medical Center She is a member of several medical associations, including the American Heart Association, Neurocritical Care Society and Bay Area Stroke Society. Ko's research interests include the study of clinical outcomes of patients who suffer from subarchnoid hemorrhages. Presentation – Advances in Imaging of Acute Stroke
Steve Hetts, MD, Associate Professor of Radiology who is specialized in interventional neuroradiology, the minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of vascular disorders of the brain and spine, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, arteriovenous fistulas, atherosclerosis and tumors. He earned a medical degree at Harvard Medical School and completed a residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology at UCSF. In his research, he studies pediatric brain aneurysms and vascular malformations, spinal vascular malformations and interventional MRI. He also is chief of neuroradiology at San Francisco General Hospital and an assistant professor of radiology at UCSF. |
